From October 23rd through November 27th, The AVA Gallery and Art Center presents
Charles A. Platt / Commemorative Retrospective, an exhibition featuring a comprehensive retrospective devoted to the work of Charles Adams Platt (1932-2020.) The exhibition examines Platt’s integration of found objects into his works, using deconstructed clothing and personal artifacts to create large-scale abstract collages that tell stories and bring memories to life.
Charles Platt’s works are formal, measured, and also layered with interior narrative. From a palette of familiar household objects and discarded clothing, structures are splayed open and arranged to reveal new and unexpected forms. The compositions, built on boards on the floor, are the culmination of hours of dedicated uncovering, cutting, pinning, painting, re-arranging, and gluing, while the artist sang along to rousing 1930’s jazz.
A founding partner of Platt Byard Dovell White Architects, LLP, Platt began practicing architecture in 1960. His architectural work has been published and exhibited internationally. His accomplished career informed his art; his artwork became a practice that freed his architecture. He died this past August, talking into his last days about how much he wanted to share his artwork with the public.
He would have loved you to come take a look.
